Pecos River flows mostly southward across New Mexico. South of Carlsbad, it flows into the state of Texas and continues several hundred more miles before joining the Rio Grande.

Pecos preserves 12,000 years of history including the ancient pueblo of Pecos, two Spanish Colonial Missions, Santa Fe Trail sites, 20th century ranch history of Forked Lightning Ranch, and the site of the Civil War Battle of Glorieta Pass.

The River offers terrific fishing and camping opportunities, particularly in the Pecos Wilderness.

For more information, please call Pecos National Historical Park (505) 757-6414x1.

Located on the beautiful Pecos River, the city of Carlsbad offers hiking, golfing, river recreation and lots of sunshine! Carlsbad Caverns National Park and the Guadalupe Mountains National Park are nearby.

Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge

One of the more biologically significant wetland areas of the Pecos River watershed system is Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Established in 1937 to provide wintering habitat for migratory birds, the refuge plays a crucial role in the conservation of wetlands in the desert Southwest.

The Refuge offers a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities: nature photography, dragonfly watching, bike riding, horseback riding, hunting. Fishing is prohibited at Bitter Lake NWR to protect rare native fish.
