Whitney Lake is located on the main stem of the Brazos River. The Whitney Lake Dam and Powerhouse are located approximately 5.5 miles southwest of Whitney, Texas, 30 miles north of Waco, Texas, and 65 miles southwest of Fort Worth, Texas. Whitney Lake is part of the Mid-Brazos Project in the Fort Worth District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Over two million people visit Whitney Lake each year to enjoy camping, hiking, mountain biking, picnicking, boating, fishing, swimming (buoyed area - no life guard on duty), scuba diving, water skiing, nature study, and excellent birding.
An annual youth fishing tournament is held on the first Saturday in June, and "aircraft fly-ins" are held at various times.

Lake Whitney State Park
The park is located on Whitney Lake near ruins of Towash, an early Texas settlement inundated by Whitney Lake. Towash Village was named for the chief of Hainai Indians, who moved into the area in 1835.
Nearby points of interest include Cleburne State Park, Meridian State Park, Dinosaur Valley State Park, and Mother Neff State Park; The Confederate Museum; Texas Ranger Hall of Fame; and Fossil Rim Exotic Wildlife Ranch.
