Lake Texoma, the 12th largest lake in the country, is known as the "Striper Capital of the World." It is one of the few reservoirs in the nation where striped bass reproduce naturally. This huge, beautiful lake is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the Southwest attracting more than 6 million visitors annually. It's famous for its great fishing, excellent marinas and resorts, its natural beauty and lively nightlife.
Lake Texoma is located on the Red River, which is the border between Texas and Oklahoma. It is maintained by the US Army Corp of Engineers and is an incredibly popular spot for fisherman, boaters, and campers.
The Corps of Engineers alone offers 10 different campgrounds with the total number of individual campsites reaching well over 600. Also available are 40 miles of equestrian trails that are enjoyed by hundreds each year and the scenic Cross Timbers hiking trail, a very popular trail that winds for 14 miles above the lake on rocky ledges and through blackjack woodland.
Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge, one of two national wildlife refuges on the lake, lies on the Big Mineral Arm of Lake Texoma (Texas side). Established in 1946, the refuge includes 3,000 acres of marsh and water and 8,000 acres of upland and farmland. During fall, winter, and spring, the marshes and waters are in constant use by migrating and wintering waterfowl.
Two-thirds of this lake lies in Oklahoma. Anglers with Texas licenses may fish in the Texas portions of the reservoir, or purchase a Lake Texoma license ($12) to fish the entire lake. The following length and bag limits apply to the entire lake:
- For striped bass and hybrid striped bass, the daily bag limit is 10 fish in any combination. Possession limit is 20 fish. There is no minimum length, but only 2 fish 20" or longer can be retained each day. Culling is prohibited.
