Buchanan lake and dam were the first completed in the Highland Lakes chain (Buchanan, Inks, Wirtz, Starcke, Mansfield and Tom Miller on Lake Austin) and were built primarily to store water and supply hydroelectricity. They are named for U.S. Rep. J.P. Buchanan, who helped secure federal funds.
The oldest, largest, and northernmost of the Highland Lakes is known as “Big Buc” to the locals and fishermen who frequent its waters. The 31 mile length, 5.5 mile width, and 124 miles of shoreline, give Lake Buchanan plenty of room for all types of recreational activity.
